Nutrition Is King: Why Your Results Start (and Stall) in the Kitchen

If you’re over 40 and serious about getting lean, building muscle, or feeling strong again—there’s one truth you can’t ignore:

Nutrition is king. 👑

You can train hard, crush your steps, and push yourself in every workout...

But if your nutrition isn’t dialed in?

You're leaving results on the table.

Training Alone Isn’t Enough

Most guys over 40 think if they just work out more, the weight will come off.

The reality?

You can’t out-train poor nutrition.

Research consistently shows that exercise alone has only a modest effect on fat loss unless it’s paired with dietary changes.

In fact, a 2012 meta-analysis published in Obesity Reviews found that combining diet and exercise is significantly more effective for weight loss—and for keeping it off.

“Exercise alone typically results in <3% weight loss over 6 months... Diet and exercise combined produce greater and more sustainable results.”

Obesity Reviews, 2012

Fat Loss Starts With Food

If your goal is fat loss, calorie awareness is key. That doesn’t mean starving yourself or jumping on a fad diet. It means eating with purpose.

In my LEAN & FIT OVER 40 program, I teach simple, realistic strategies to help you stay consistent without obsessing over every bite:

Hand-portioning: A flexible, visual way to control portions without needing a food scale

Mindful eating: To reduce emotional snacking and help you reconnect with real hunger cues

Habits over hacks: So you can finally build a system that sticks

But if you want to go deeper and be more dialed in?

I’ve got you covered there, too.

I also teach you how to log and track your food using apps like MyFitnessPal, along with an education in macronutrients:

  • What they are (Protein, Carbs, Fats)

  • What they do in your body

  • How to balance them to support your goals

Whether you're the type to keep it simple or the guy who loves data and detail, I’ll give you the tools to stay on track and adjust when needed.

Muscle Gains Require Fuel

Training breaks your body down.

Nutrition builds it back up.

To build muscle—especially over 40—you need:

  • Enough protein to support recovery and growth

  • Sufficient carbs to fuel training and performance

  • A solid calorie baseline so your body isn't constantly running on empty

Here’s the kicker: older adults need more protein per meal than younger folks to stimulate muscle growth. A 2018 study in Nutrients recommends about 0.4g protein/kg/meal, spread over 3–4 meals a day.

For a 180 lb (82 kg) man, that’s roughly 33g of protein per meal.

So if you’re training hard but still not seeing muscle gains?

It might not be your workout—it might be your plate.

Strength, Recovery, and Energy—It All Comes Back to Nutrition

Ever feel like you’re doing everything right, but progress is painfully slow?

  • Sore for days?

  • Struggling with energy during workouts?

  • Plateauing despite consistency?

It could be your recovery—and that’s directly tied to how you eat.

Research shows that even mild under-eating can impair performance, delay recovery, and increase injury risk. And for guys over 40, recovery is already slower than it used to be.

The solution?

Fuel properly, recover well, and let your body actually build from the work you’re putting in.

Where Most People Slip Up

Here’s the hard truth:

Most people train like beasts…

But eat like amateurs.

They hit their workouts but wing it in the kitchen. Or they think they’re eating “pretty clean” but are constantly overshooting their goals or undereating key nutrients.

If you want to see real results?

You’ve got to align your eating with your goals.

It doesn’t have to be extreme—just intentional.

Master Your Nutrition—And the Rest Will Follow

Getting lean, building strength, boosting energy—it all starts with what’s on your plate.

If your workouts aren’t delivering the results you want,

Don’t just train harder.

Train smarter—and eat smarter.
